After Art Week - A quiet revolution

I look at my paintings and sometimes think they are shallow. Today I watched a video of the latest Tate exhibition of the work of Georgia O'Keeffe. Her landscapes have such depth to them that they have an ability to draw you in like a vortex ( as Alistair Sooke so eloquently put it.) For a two dimensional medium to do this takes great skill. I love sculptural form - but am not a sculptor. I sense the solidity of things. I strive to get integrity into my work. I search for form with paint and scratching into the plaster surface. My work is not large and bold, but quiet - perhaps I need to be louder. I have completed a painting on the random pour - it is taken from a sketch done from a cottage next to a stream pounding down a hill. The cottage is called -Nantyblodaubach. I sat there in the evening sun listening to the stream pouring over stones in its gully down to the sea, in front of it a low wall was planted with aquilegia, early species tulips which were dying

Yellow Hill

On the yellow hill there are no memorials But set before it are fractured hollows where stone should be And in the ruins and tramways stand the quarry men's houses Where there are voices that we cannot hear Nails in boots on cobbles The dust and toil The hail, wind, rain and snow This is the place where voices would have been heard They would have been here mixed with steam and hammer blows and furnaces Cranes, shovels, tuns The birds would have seen the capped heads of men Iron wheels and oiled hands Now they see the yellow hill The curling grasses And grazing the empty land - sheep, ponies, cows And a man with a dog Scribbling. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- An idea for another painting is formulating. Painting for Sabatino at RHS Wisley

I have just started a fresco of a squash and pumpkin display put together by the plant trials team and students at RHS Wisley under the direction of Sabatino Urzo @SabatinoUrzo www.twitter.com Inspired and encouraged by Sabatino - I am hoping to deliver the finished Fresco in the Spring. Follow its progress here. The next stage of the fresco is blocking in colour - this is the risky part as once the watercolour goes on it sinks into the surface of the plaster. This is the point where the painting takes on a life of its own. The only way is forward now. To be honest you can scrape back a little but you cannot start over - so here we go. The detail is now being built up in layers of pigment and sgraffito to add light, depth and weight to the image. This week - 23/1/16 The fresco has begun to take on a life of its own. More detail added - more depth and weight. It has begun to build up into a stronger composition. It reminds me of the Dutch school of painting
