Out of limbo

I have been quietly working on a series of new drawings and paintings on a larger scale for a collaborative exhibition/installation with Eleanor Flaherty coming up at the beginning of next year at Oriel Lliw Pontardawe. This is a challenging, exciting and different project - the like of which I haven't embarked upon since my Fine Art Degree. I am really pleased and a little surprised that two of these drawings have been shortlisted for Oriel Cric Crickhowell orielcricgallery.blogspot.co.uk open competition in May 17. (these are featured in the previous blogpost) During the past few weeks I also took part in www.twitter.com/ @twitrartexhibit exhibition in Stratford Upon Avon. After Art Week - A quiet revolution

I look at my paintings and sometimes think they are shallow. Today I watched a video of the latest Tate exhibition of the work of Georgia O'Keeffe. Her landscapes have such depth to them that they have an ability to draw you in like a vortex ( as Alistair Sooke so eloquently put it.) For a two dimensional medium to do this takes great skill. I love sculptural form - but am not a sculptor. I sense the solidity of things. I strive to get integrity into my work. I search for form with paint and scratching into the plaster surface. My work is not large and bold, but quiet - perhaps I need to be louder. I have completed a painting on the random pour - it is taken from a sketch done from a cottage next to a stream pounding down a hill. The cottage is called -Nantyblodaubach. I sat there in the evening sun listening to the stream pouring over stones in its gully down to the sea, in front of it a low wall was planted with aquilegia, early species tulips which were dying ...

I've started the journey

Passenger aircraft making trails ( ants) journeying along pre determined routes Surface tunnels created by ants pattern of movement I have begun the MA in Fine Art and Contemporary Dialogues, and have decided to use this blog as a record of the journey. My 'Thought Experiment' selected randomly from unmarked envelopes on the floor of the lecture theatre asks me to reflectively follow the movement of ants. I have started to gather information - visual, thought connections and text. My favourite book as a 10 year old. I had a childhood fascination/obsession with insects - made an ant nest in a jar. Collected the pupae, watched the queen ants and the male flying ants mate - the queen ants losing their wings and seeking out new nest sites. The winged males die.
